A Blue Christmas?

I went home last night to discover blue feathers as part of the decor on our Christmas tree. Interesting. Christmas is always a surprise.

Praise God

I am done with finals. I am going to eat sugar coated food for breakfast, prance around in high heels while doing laundry, and wear my guady Christmas earrings while shopping at the mall.
I am high off life with the help of vitamins and coffee.

1:19am update the following day: I accomplished none of my goals except eating sugar.

Absolute Power Corrupts

Last night we had a proctor man (incoprorated herein by reference as "Proctor Man") who took his job as a zealous crusade. Students were required to put their notes up to the front about 45 minutes early and the classroom sat in silence for about 20 minutes before the exam began with Proctor Man on patrol.

My favorite part was when Proctor Man went up to a guy and told him to sit up straight in his chair saying, "Don't you even care that you're about to take an exam?" Glad he told this to Brian Cruz, member of Law Review and Moot Court and the coolest guy ever. I guess Proctor Man got confused and thought his job was to monitor the posture of students before the test began as everyone knows that good posture=good grades and strong moral fiber.

Sitting there under his control reminded me of the experiment they did at Stanford with students mimicking prisoners and guards. It's scary to think what power can do to people.

So Close!

Tax Final today, Internet and E-Commerce Final tomorrow. All I can think about is my family in Big Bear, presents I haven't gotten and the laundry I need to do...and I am left with one thought...is it really necessary to have finals until the 21st of December? Santa said he's against it.

I Love Him

My brother was accepted to Yale

Although Yale is his first choice, he told me he was thinking instead of going to Stanford because it's closer to home.

I told him to go to Yale. My heart was breaking knowing how far away he'd be next year but I had to do it. I never understood that saying that if you love someone, you have to let him/her go. It seems so messed up. But now I understand. He's all grown up. But he'll always be my baby brother.

Good Advice That I Just Didn't Take

“The hardest thing in the world to understand is the income tax.” — Albert Einstein*

Obviously, Albert wouldn't have taken Federal Income Tax LAW. Good thing I'm so much smarter than Einstein.

* This is a real quote. If you don't believe me, check this out. http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=110483,00.html IRS people sure do have a sense of humor.

The Quest Continues

It's been 2 solid years since I've begun my quest to make the best chocolate chip cookies in the world. If you're looking for a great recipe don't ask me. I continue to fail. But at least these look like cookies. At least I can console myself by eating my failures.

One Step Closer!!!

Only $1.00 at Walmart and you too could be greeting the holidays with style!

Now that's hot!

Forget Crawford...

Prospective CALI Evidence Winner

The Best Dinner I've Ever Had

As poor law students know, splurging means going to McDonald's and super sizing it.

This is a photograph of REAL silverware and REAL cloth napkins and REAL lobster and REAL filet mignon (wrapped in bacon with port-sautéed mushrooms) and REAL wine (not out of a box). AND I, a poor law student really ate this dinner.

I'm lovin' it. Thanks Mark.

Treasure Found

You never know what you're going to find.

Looking for more information on Evidence and found this hidden gem on Professor Garland's website.

I can now give up my fascination with holiday sweaters.

Thanks Angela.

Secret Dreams

As law school finals continue I secretly dream of being a Kindergarten teacher who wears the bright holiday sweaters, large Christmas pins and huge Christmas tree earrings. I dream about baking the most delicious cookies with red sparkles on top in my holiday apron while listening to Christmas carols...where did I go wrong? Maybe I too am like Lex Luther who has traded dreams for money and power. Or maybe I would be dreaming of being a lawyer if I were a Kindergarten teacher.

To Be Loved

So in the Christmas episode in Smallville, Lex gets shot and sees what his future would be like if he gives up his Luther empire. He sees that he is married to Lana, the girl he has always secretly loved (but she in real life hates him) and he has the admiration of all of Smallville and the friends he's always wanted (including Clark). So of course he is very happy and then Lana dies in childbirth. Because Lex has given up all his money he can't get her to the best hospital to save her life and his dad who has disowned him refuses to help. So he watches helplessly as Lana dies.
He then wakes up from being shot and decides from that time forward to not give up his Luther empire. He wants power and money so that he will never be helpless again. So this is the turning point in his life where he went down the opposite road of "happiness." And we all know that Lex turns out "evil."
The thing is though, that Lex just wanted to be happy but when he was happy he lost Lana, the one thing that mattered. Did he turn evil because he is evil or because he didn't want Lana to die in the alternate life? He choose to be hated instead by everyone just so that he could secure and protect those that matter most to him...he sacrificed his own happy future to save Lana from dying and choosing an alternate, and darker route.
This was a very sad episode. Poor Lex. All he wants is to be loved and that is the one thing he can't have.

The Night Before Finals...

Grading Reform Proposals Approved by Faculty

General Changes:

All grades will be rounded to the hundredths (e.g., A- = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, etc.).
A new top grade of A+ will be awarded 4.33 points.
The new minimum grade point average for academic good standing will be 2.33
For students who have completed one or more semesters or grading periods prior to the implementation of this new policy, the minimum grade point average for academic good standing will remain 2.0.

First Year Grading Changes:

The new mean will be 2.9 (subject to waiver by Dean).
The median will be B (subject to waiver by Dean).
The instructor shall award a minimum of 15% grades in the A range (A+, A, and A-), again, subject to waiver by the Dean.
The guideline for standard deviations will be .65 or higher.
These standards will apply to first year day students, to evening students, and PLEAS students when taking classes taught in the first year day program, and to SCALE students during the first and second grading periods.

Upper Division Grading Changes

The mean will be 3.0 (plus or minus one tenth) and subject to waiver by the Dean.
The median will be B (subject to waiver by the Dean).
As a guideline, instructors should award 15% or more A grades (A+, A, A-).
The mean and median standards are discretionary for classes with fewer than 30 students.

Conversion Formula for Transition Students

The faculty approved a second proposal that addresses concerns of students in transition (students who will have received grades under both the old and new systems). The proposals calls for development of a conversion formula to provide an adjusted law school grade point average. The conversion formula will be calculated based on Fall semester grades and should be available some time during the Spring semester. This converted LGPA will be the basis for calculating class rank for all students in transition. In addition, the transitional student would have both the unconverted and the converted LGPA printed on the student’s transcript, with a note of explanation.

The transition steps address two concerns that students have raised. First, the converted LGPA will be higher than the original LGPA, allowing a student to include the converted LGPA on a resume. Second, the transition steps will address problems in some transitional students have voiced about losing class rank position to other students in the same class who have more graded units left on their schedules. Since class rank will be determined based on the converted grade point average, the number of grades a student receives under the new system should have no greater impact than if there had been no revision in the grading policy.
